Fast-growing native cottonwood with ascending branches that form a pyramidal crown. The narrow, willow-like leaves are light green in summer, turning golden yellow in fall. Susceptible to leaf spot and bacterial wet wood.
Narrow-leaf cottonwood occurs primarily in mountainous areas from southern Alberta and Saskatchewan south to Oregon and California (east of the Sierra Nevada), Arizona, New Mexico, and Trans-Pecos Texas and in northern Mexico (northeastern Sonora). Check availability here. Large, fast-growing, deciduous tree. Easily grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun.
Leaves: Yellow-green to dark green, long and narrow, 1-2 inches long, with finely serrated edges (similar to willows, because they are in the willow family). Showy yellow leaves in the fall. Fruit: Catkins in the early spring. Firewise? No. Drought-tolerant? No. Bark: Rough and gray. Where to Plant: Suitable for sandy, loamy, and heavy soils.

11 kwi 2018 · Narrowleaf Cottonwood like other Cottonwoods, is often planted as an ornamental and thrives and spreads when planted out. It’s range is pretty vast, like other Cottonwood species, and stretches from Canada to Mexico in scattered pockets of abundance.
Cottonwood trees were a welcome sight for those settlers and Native Americans crossing Texas. Their presence indicated water within easy digging distance. Quick growing, they can reach 100 feet tall with a spread of 75 feet in under twenty years.
