List of the smallest stars by star type. The red dwarf stars are considered the smallest stars known, and representative of the smallest star possible. Brown dwarfs are not massive enough to build up the pressure in the central regions to allow nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium.
13 lut 2009 · The smallest known star right now is OGLE-TR-122b, a red dwarf star that’s part of a binary stellar system. This red dwarf the smallest star to ever have its radius accurately measured;...
21 maj 2018 · Located at a distance of 4.25 light years, Proxima Centauri is perhaps the closest star to our solar system. It is the third and the smallest component in the Alpha Centuari Triple star system. Due to its apparent magnitude of 11.05, Proxima is not visible to the naked eye.
In 2017, an international team of astronomers announced the discovery of a so-called red dwarf star that’s so small it barely functions as a star. Code-named EBLM J0555-57Ab and lying some 600 light-years away, it’s similar in size to the planet Saturn.
Most of the stars in this list are within the Milky Way except BAT99-123 (near the end of the list), which is in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Smallest stars are mostly red dwarfs, brown dwarfs, white dwarfs and neutron stars. 1 solar radius (radius of the Sun) = 695700 km. Coolest neutron star known. Orbited by 3 exoplanets.
EBLM J0555-57 is a triple star system residing 600 light-years away from Earth. Of its three stars, EBLM J0555-57Ab is the smallest star known that’s also massive enough to support nuclear fusion in its core. Absolute Size: Approximately 36,184 miles (58,232 km) Size compared to our Sun: 0.084 times the Sun’s radius; Age: Unknown
This NASA Hubble Space Telescope picture resolves, for the first time, one of the smallest stars in our Milky Way Galaxy. Called Gliese 623b or Gl623b, the diminutive star (right of center) is ten times less massive than the Sun and 60,000 times fainter.
