According to Smyth (1878), "every marked feature in the river has a distinctive name", which complicates the etymology. For example, Panamilli, Tangula (alt: Tongala), and Tiregola were recorded as being locations or bends in the river, yet are occasionally used to incorrectly name the river itself.
The river, known to the Wurundjeri people as Birrarung, was an important resource for the Wurundjeri people and several sites along the river and its tributaries were important meeting places where corroborees were held between Indigenous communities.

Both names have equal status and are considered official names for the river. The new dual name reinforces the Wiradjuri peoples’ deep, ongoing connection with the river.
