Jesus teaches that the poor in spirit are Makarios because theirs is the kingdom of heaven (v 3). The kingdom of heaven refers to the new spiritual and political order that Jesus has come to bring. If we do not recognize our spiritual need, we will not seek the benefits of heaven.
