Prefixes are located at the beginning of a medical term. The prefix alters the meaning of the medical term. It is important to spell and pronounce prefixes correctly. Many prefixes that you find in medical terms are common English-language prefixes.
The medical term polydipsia, which means “much thirst,” comes from the prefix poly-(“much” or “many”) and the suffix -dipsia (“thirst”). A number of medical conditions can cause polydipsia (Fig. 2.3), including diabetes mellitus.
