Please make sure you have booked a blood test for the next morning (day 2) before taking the tablets (day 1). Take the prescribed 1 mg dose of dexamethasone. This is usually dispensed as two 0.5 mg tablets which are then taken together, at approximately 11pm (day 1).
Low-dose overnight -- You will get 1 milligram (mg) of dexamethasone at 11 p.m., and a health care provider will draw your blood the next morning at 8 a.m. for a cortisol measurement. High-dose overnight -- The provider will measure your cortisol on the morning of the test.
The dexamethasone tablets must be taken before going to bed (ideally about 11pm) the night before the blood test. You may eat and drink normally prior to the test.
