I agree with much of what you say - Myrtle Beach ( cash cow of the state ) gets a bad rap. It is a great town and offers a wonderful quality of life. Because we are a tourist destination, we have so many restaurants and really good shopping.
Myrtle beach on the south end isn’t a real town and it’s more of a tourist trap on the boulevard and such. This leads to transient populations, aka drug addicts, their dealers, girlfriends and prostitutes. This is also partly in due to the cheap hotel rates during the off season and the same allure That brings regular tourist here.
It’s called the dirty myrtle for a reason , the last time I was there it stunk so bad we left the beach , the sand is dirty and gross from cigarettes and garbage. However this has been a couple years ago and it may be completely different.

For shopping visit Barefoot Landing, Boardwalk on the Beach, and Market Common, for dining KW Cafeteria is cheep and very good (especially breakfast), also visit River City, Sticky Fingers, & Captain Georges.
