30 lip 2023 · Typically benign, a leiomyoma originates from the smooth muscle cells of the uterus and the myometrium and is estrogen-dependent. Leiomyomas are classified based on their location, most commonly intramural fibroids that develop in the uterine wall.
Endometrial Stroma - the underlying lamina propria is highly cellular (stellate cells, macrophages and lymphocytes). Uterine Glands - during the menstrual cycle the surface epithelium invaginates into the stroma to form simple tubular glands lined with mostly non-ciliated secretory cells.
The uterine nerves end within the myometrium and endometrium and accompany the vasculature. Sympathetic fibers from T12—L1 induces uterine contraction and vasoconstriction while parasympathetic fibers S2—S4 facilitates vasodilation and uterine relaxation.
