The very first deer contest began in 1965 in the small South Texas town of Freer located in Duval County. Founder, Leonel R. Garza, was the manager of the Center Circle Gas Station at the time. Leonel was number 3 of 13 children to be born to Lazaro and Olivia Garza of Benavides, Texas.
