On a micro-level, music is used as a technology of the self, helping actors to focus attention, shift energy levels, reconstitute past experiences, and channel emotion in everyday life (DeNora 2000). It is also a resource in cognition, an instrument of control, and a material for social ordering (DeNora 2003).
