Muscle Contraction Process. Muscle contraction begins with an action potential traveling down a motor neuron to the neuromuscular junction, where acetylcholine is released. This triggers an action potential in the sarcolemma, which spreads into the T-tubules, stimulating the release of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
The contraction phase occurs as the muscle generates increasing levels of tension; the Ca 2+ ions in the sarcoplasm have bound to troponin, tropomyosin has shifted away from actin-binding sites, cross-bridges have formed, and sarcomeres are actively shortening.
Muscle contraction occurs when muscle fibers get shorter. Literally, the muscle fibers get smaller in size. To understand how this happens, you need to know more about the structure of muscle fibers.
