Mukden POW Memorial Society was formed specifically to honor the courage and sacrifice of the men held at the Mukden (Hoten) POW camp in Shenyang, China. The men held at Mukden were mainly Americans and British with much smaller groups of Australians, Dutch, and New Zealanders.
Evacuation of American POWs from the Mukden area began shortly after the initial OSS team arrived and ended by mid-September. The first group left by air on 21 August, eighteen POWs needing immediate medical assistance. Another thirty medical cases were evacuated by air on 24 August.

Within days, these men joined a POW roster that numbered 132,000 Allied airmen, sailors, and soldiers (35,000 were Americans). Most fell into captivity early, as Japan captured Wake, Guam, Singapore, the Philippines, and the Dutch East Indies.
