There is no exact print run known for Fallen Empires. There are several offical sources with numbers ranging from 312 million to 375 million cards. WotC also stopped printing the set when it became clear that it was overprinted, so the actual print run may have been even lower.
The beta print run for Magic was 78,000 60-card starter decks and 210,000 15-card boosters, for a total of 7.83 million cards. We can use these numbers to calculate the print runs for Alpha. This gives us a total of 122,000 rares, 548,000 uncommons and 1,940,000 commons. Cards are printed on sheets of 121 cards.
The oversized cards (from the commander sets) appear to be printed on 7x7 sheets and regular sized cards are printed on 11x11 sheets (though the Commander set may have been 10x10 so it was one sheet per deck).
Yes it’s incredibly hard to find copies of a card, but you only need to get to 11 copies of a rare, or 45 of an uncommon… to have 1% of the print run. The later sets, while more commonplace, require just a staggering number of copies to hit the same 1%.
Uncut Sheets. One of the key pieces of information for print run calculations is the layout and structure of the uncut sheets of each set. Luckily most of the original sets have had the layout of their sheets documented, with a few notable exceptions.
14 gru 2020 · Limited Edition - that is Alpha and Beta combined - was supposed to be 10 million cards total. This was the expected print run, and this limitation was stated by Peter Adkinson early on. In early documents, we hence often find 7.5 million as the print run for Beta.
