For a ruminant – a herbivore that ferments its food in special gastric chambers like a cow or a sheep – chevrotains are a peculiar example. They’re much closer to the prehistoric ancestor of modern ruminants than any other species alive today and have some primitive features (or lack thereof) to prove it.
Chevrotains, or mouse-deer, are diminutive, even-toed ungulates that make up the family Tragulidae, and are the only living members of the infraorder Tragulina. The 10 extant species are placed in three genera, [ 1 ] [ 2 ] but several species also are known only from fossils . [ 3 ]
