Mount Zion Temple is a Reform Jewish synagogue located at 1300 Summit Avenue, in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the United States. Founded in 1856 as Mount Zion Hebrew Association, it was the first Jewish congregation in Minnesota.
The first building was erected at 10th and Minnesota Streets in downtown Saint Paul. In 1871 they hired their first rabbi, Rabbi Leopold Wintner, a Hungarian immigrant who had a liberal spirit. Mount Zion joined the Reform Movement officially in 1878.
Our landmark temple, located on historic Summit Avenue in Saint Paul, is one of the last projects designed by the internationally renowned modernist Bauhaus architect Erich Mendelsohn. Mendelsohn died during its construction in 1952.
Mount Zion Temple, the oldest Jewish congregation in the city, was established by eight Germans Jewish families in 1856, two years before Minnesota became a state. First founded as the Mount Zion Hebrew Association, the families arrived as part of an early wave of Jewish immigrants.
