The modern edifice grew as a series of four alternating stages of volcanic activity, averaging a little more than 100,000 years duration.

Mount Rainier, an active volcano currently at rest between eruptions, is the highest peak in the Cascade Range. Its edifice, capped by snow and 25 glaciers, has been built up by untold eruptions over the past 500,000 years. It last erupted in 1894-95, when small summit explosions were reported by observers in Seattle and Tacoma.
Although the Cascades volcano has not erupted since 1894, Mount Rainier is active and will erupt again. But what skews Kerbs’ view of the mountain are large mudflows called lahars, which can occur without warning — even in the absence of a significant eruptive event.
Glacier-clad Mount Rainier, seen here from the NW, is located in the northern Cascade Range. Most eruptions originate from a central conduit, which produces the common conical profile of stratovolcanoes, but flank eruptions also occur. Both isolated stratovolcanoes like Mount Rainier and compound volcanoes formed by overlapping cones are common.
The largest known explosive eruption of Mount Rainier occurred between about 30,000 and 100,000 years ago and is recorded by a pumice deposit that has been recognized northeast, east, and southeast of the volcano.
