Zygosity refers to the genetic makeup of the pregnancy, or the number of zygotes that become fertilized leading to a multiple birth. Twins, in rarer cases triplets, quadruplets (four), quintuplets (five), arising from a single fertilized ovum are termed monozygotic (MZ).

Monozygotic twinning is seen at a rate of 0.4% in natural conceptions, though that rate is significantly higher, ranging from 1.57–5.6%, when blastocysts are transferred using assisted reproductive technologies (ART) [3 – 5].
