- Varignon's Theorem
A moment of force, or torque, is a measure of the tendency of that force to rotate a body about a selected point or axis, called the moment center. This tendency increases with the magnitude of the force, and also with the distance between the line-of-action of the force and the moment center.
Given any point on an extended body, if there is a force acting on that body that does not travel through that point, then that force will cause a moment about that point. As discussed on the moments page, a moment is a force’s tendency to cause rotation.

In three dimensions, the moment of a force about a point can be resolved into components about the \(x\text{,}\) \(y\) and \(z\) axes. The moment produces a rotational tendency about all three axes simultaneously, but only a portion of the total moment acts about any particular axis.

The following interactive tool illustrates the principle of moments for calculating the moment of a force about a point in two-dimensions. Change the direction of the force and observe how its moment about the point is calculated based on the moments of the force components.
