From August 1912 until first discontinued by Winchester in May 1964, nearly two million Model 12 shotguns were produced in various grades and barrel lengths. Initially chambered for 20 gauge only, the 12 and 16 gauge versions came out in 1913 (first listed in the 1914 catalogs), and the 28 gauge version came out in 1934.
3 kwi 2016 · I'm very fortunate to own a 1942 barrel-dated Winchester Model 12 trench gun in original unissued, unfired condition. The barrel does protrude past the bayonet mount but only very little, maybe 1/16" or so.
Over the years, civilian Model 12's were offered in 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauges with barrels ranging from 25" to 32" long. Model 12 Riot and Trench guns with shorter barrels were produced for police and military use. Trench guns came with a barrel heat shield and a bayonet lug.
Model 12 Trench gun. The Model 12 Trench gun was developed for the US Army. The barrel is much shorter and extends only slightly beyond the tubular magazine, a heat shield is fitted and lugs for the M1917 bayonet are fitted.
In the Model 12 Winchester, you can measure from the top of the receiver from where the bolt opening ends, to the barrel tip, to get an accurate overall barrel length. As an example, in the riot gun which has a 20" barrel, the measurement from the barrel tip to the receiver front is only 19 1/4 ".
