Mithril bolts are a ranged projectile which are fired from a mithril crossbow or higher. Level 36 Ranged is required to equip them. To create mithril bolts, a player must first smith unfinished mithril bolts by using a mithril bar on an anvil while carrying a hammer.
For bossing the go-to's are either enchanted diamond, or ruby bolts. Enchanted diamond bolts have a chance to do more damage at higher accuracy, and ruby bolts have a chance to do damage based on the % health remaining of the enemy. Only really useful when they have ~200+ health.

I just don't recommend slaying with range apart from boss tasks (shamans, gorillas, jad, etc) or until you get blowpipe/karil's crossbow. If you have to, use broad bolts, crystal bow, or msb(i) with rune arrows.
Yes, mith bolts are barely an upgrade (~2-4% better depending on max hit breakpoints) over bone bolts since dorgeshuun crossbow has a faster attack speed. Darts are much better range exp/hr (~25-30% better than mith bolts, again depending on max hit breakpoints).
