20 maj 2023 · There are 26 varieties of toad and frog sounds in Missouri. These include eight true frog calls, ten tree frog sounds, four true toad noises, two spadefoot toad calls, and two narrow-mouthed toad calls.
The American bullfrog is Missouri’s largest frog. This common species is easy to hear on warm nights when the males call a deep, sonorous “jug-a-rum, jug-a-rum” that can be heard from half a mile away.
The BEST time to hear a male Gray Tree Frog calling is at night, but they can be heard randomly at any time of day. Calls are heard during spring and summer when males are trying to find a mate and establish a territory.

Te voice of a chorus frog sounds like someone running a thumbnail across the teeth of a pocket comb. A cricket frog makes a clicking sound, “gick-gick,” like two pebbles struck together twice. Te bullfrog’s baritone call is a deep, bellowing “ger-rrr-um.”
Tree frogs are able to make sound by allowing airflow to go via the lungs, past the larynx, and into the mouth, causing the vocal cords to osculate. The vocal muscles can make up fifteen percent of a frog’s body mass.
