29 kwi 2022 · The 52-mg levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system maintains an excellent safety profile and contraceptive efficacy through 8 years. For years 6 to 8, the 3-year Pearl Index (95% confidence interval) was 0.28 (0.03–1.00) with a 3-year cumulative failure rate of 0.68% (0.17–2.71).
MIRENA contains a total of 52 mg levonorgestrel. The in vivo levonorgestrel release rate 24 days after insertion is approximately 21 mcg per day, decreasing continuously to approximately 19 mcg per day after 1 year, to 11 mcg per day after 5 years and to 7 mcg per day after 8 years of use (see Table 7).
