One thing you might be doing is trying to use it with minecraft 1.8.9 - Only 1.8.8 and 1.8 are supported. (1.8.8 and 1.8 can connect to 1.8.9 servers). If you do want to use it with optifine, you'll need to install optifine for 1.8 and liteloader for 1.8, and then use the 1.8 liteloader version.
