I don't know of any other recipe mods for 1.8.9, but JEI has similar controls to NEI according to the description page. If the diamond is in your inventory, you can hover over it with the mouse and press U.

NEI (not enough items) or JEI (just enough items), basically two mod that adds an unlimited recipe book to the game. I don’t remember which one was on 1.8.9, probably NEI. Oh if you want to look at something recipe just click R key on the item or search it with the bar and then left click.
