Swords have 0.625s cooldown, while axe cooldown ranges from 1.0s (gold/diamond) to 1.25s (wood/stone), with iron axes being in the middle with 1.1s cooldown. Axes can disable a shield on hit, which is relevant only in PvP and when you are being attacked by the Vindicator illager.
