After Linda becomes pregnant, she and Mickey move in with Mrs. Johnstone until their wedding, which is scheduled in a month.
Mrs. Johnstone meets Edward. The boys arrive at Mrs. Johnstone’s house, and Mickey reintroduces Edward to his mother. Mrs. Johnstone is surprised to see Edward, but is clearly also very happy. Mrs. Johnstone offers to pay for the cinema, and Mickey goes into the other room to fetch the money.
The play moves seven years into the future, as the son whom Mrs. Johnstone kept, Mickey, knocks on his mother’s door while carrying a toy gun. His mother comes out, relieved to see him, and embraces him.
Act One, part 8: Moving away (pp. 48–58) Summary. Mr and Mrs Lyons are moving house, from the town to the country. Edward goes to say goodbye to Mrs Johnstone. She comforts him because he is upset, saying he wants to stay near Mickey and will never forget him.
She says that Mickey had better not ever go bad like Sammy, or she won’t love him anymore. Mickey tells her to stop saying that she loves him, but Linda retorts that she does, and that she doesn’t care who knows. Embarrassed, Mickey hurries off to school, and Linda follows him.
Mickey tells his mother that he wishes she had given him away instead of Edward. He waves the gun around in anger, pointing it at Edward as he shouts, I could have been him! The gun goes off...
