Dead Cells is a 2018 roguelike-Metroidvania game developed by Motion Twin and Evil Empire, and published by Motion Twin. The player takes the role of an amorphous creature called the Prisoner. As the Prisoner, the player must fight their way out of a diseased island in order to slay the island's King.

The most recuring characters in the lore are the Alchemist and the King. We also meet (probably) the Timekeeper and someone in the prison. I think the prison character can be safely regarded as a tutorial device, at least for now, so the focus is on the Alchemist and the King.
Inside the prison, the prisoners wrote on the cell walls questioning why the prison was being filled with the innocent, or why they didn’t want to get infected and die. Eventually, they began escaping.
