I felt that in the grand scheme the villain was more of a maguffin to the greater drama between K and J. The MIB series is more of a character driven story than it is plot driven; everyone going into it knows the earth will be saved by the end, but we watch it because of the dynamic between the two main protagonists.
Boris the Animal was a good villain, and I thought all the performances were really solid. Will Smith was still as charismatic as ever. I also think the action and effects held up better than in the first two, but I guess that's to be expected when there's 20 years between two films.
The plot resembles the MIB animated series episode "The Head Trip Syndrome" which was about a human bigot who hated aliens and uses a time machine to kill off the founding members of MIB. The difference for the film is that the villain is an alien who wanted to travel back in time to kill K.
He's got the motivation to want to wipe out MiB as a whole in the past and is big enough to do it. For what feels like a last film I was disappointed they used a one-shot random villain instead of one with more weight.
