The 2.0 and 2.3 ecoboost are ultimately based on the Mazda 2.0 and 2.3 MZR engine (also sold as the Duratec). That motor was exceedingly reliable, and Ford has strengthened the internals with the addition of turbos.

Compared to a 5.0 the 2.7L has more power in a daily driver, sure the 5.0 will beat it in a 1/4 mile, but the 2nd gen 2.7L puts out 400lb-ft torque @2750rpm (5.0L requires 4500RPM to hit 400lb-ft), and it really shines in quick acceleration.
