In return, the Archbishopric agreed to an extended loan, and in 1997 the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, designed by architect Francois de Menil, opened. The frescoes returned to Cyprus in 2012. The chapel has since housed long-term art installations.
Since that time, the Menil Foundation has been responsible stewards of these great works—restoring, preserving, and exhibiting the frescoes in the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, a purpose-built home that honors the works’ original artistic and spiritual purpose.
Designed by Francois de Menil, the Chapel opened to the public in 1997 and hundreds of thousands have passed through its doors since. These images depict architectural representations of the Chapel, as well as the construction process and the completed Chapel with the frescoes installed.
