28 maj 2024 · Cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine are the only currently available symptomatic medications for cognition and global functioning in patients with dementia. Cholinesterase inhibitors target the acetylcholine deficit arising from loss of neurons in the nucleus basalis of Meynert and its projections in patients with dementia.
o Memantine, 5-20mg/day, may be beneficial, if not already prescribed. o Trazodone 50 -150mg daily as a single or divided dose may help restlessness and agitation. o SSRIs, e.g. low dose sertraline, and mirtazapine 15-30mg/day, may be useful in obvious depressive symptoms.
