Melissa will be remembered, I suspect, for the qualities that caught my attention the first time I heard her speak about ten years ago: her rare candor and compassion on the hard problem of Zion belonging across social division.

She was an expert in the social and cultural history of modern China, charismatic global Christianity, and women and religion.
