Melanocytes are melanin-producing neural crest-derived [3] cells located in the bottom layer (the stratum basale) of the skin's epidermis, the middle layer of the eye (the uvea), [4] the inner ear, [5] vaginal epithelium, [6] meninges, [7] bones, [8] and heart found in many mammals and birds. [9]
1 maj 2023 · Function. In its various forms, melanin fulfills a variety of biological functions, including skin and hair pigmentation and photoprotection of the skin and eye. Pigmentation of the skin results from the accumulation of melanin-containing melanosomes in the basal layer of the epidermis.
Neural crest-derived melanocytes in the body can be categorized both morphologically and functionally into three subpopulations; they are found in the epidermis, the uveal tract of the eye, and regenerating hair.
Melanocyte reside between the basal layer cells and through dendritic processes communicates with about 30-40 keratinocytes in the epidermal melanin unit. Melanocyte synthesizes melanins in melanosomes transported into keratinocytes to protect them from UV radiation.
