What’s covered? Medicare covers these services in a skilled nursing facility (SNF): • Semi-private room (a room you share with other patients) • Meals. • Skilled nursing care. • Medical social services. • Medications. • Medical supplies and equipment used in the facility.
The medical and other health services described in the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual, Chapter 6, “Hospital Services Covered Under Part B,” §§10 - 10.2.4, are generally provided by, or under arrangements made by, skilled nursing facilities and are therefore extended care services.
Your doctor or other health care provider has decided that you need daily skilled care (like intravenous fluids/medications or physical therapy). You must get the care from, or under the supervision of, skilled nursing or therapy staff. You get these skilled services in a Medicare-certified SNF.
Skilled care is health care given when you need skilled nursing or rehabilitation staff to manage, observe, and evaluate your care. Examples of skilled care are changing sterile dressings and physical therapy. Medicare will only cover skilled care when you meet certain conditions (see page 8).
6 gru 2023 · There are specific requirements that beneficiaries must meet to qualify for Medicare coverage for Skilled Nursing Facilities. The patient must have been an inpatient of a hospital facility for a minimum of three consecutive days.
“Medicare Coverage of Skilled Nursing Facility Care” is prepared by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS and states oversee the quality of skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). State agencies make certification recommendations to CMS. CMS is responsible for certifying SNFs.
