In the Bible, the middle stone in the second row of the High Priest's breastplate (Exodus 28:18) is called in the Hebrew sappiyr (Strong's Concordance #H5601). While Strong's translates the word as "sapphire," the BDB lexicon states it could be translated as either a sapphire or a lapis lazuli.
In the ancient Near East, lapis lazuli was used in jewelry and personal ornaments, beads, small decorations, and architectural decoration. The stone was often used for the eyes of divine and human statues. Lapis lazuli symbolizes the purity of the gods in Ugaritic literature (Hill: 280).
