25 sty 2016 · One of the undisputed masterpieces of musical theatre, West Side Story began as an idea called East Side Story. Director/choreographer Jerome Robbins and composer Leonard Bernstein wanted to set Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in modern dress, dealing with contemporary prejudices.
Synopsis. Inspired by the timeless story of Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story takes Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, and places them in the vibrant battleground of New York City’s West Side in the 1950s.
Classic examples include My Fair Lady's "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," Carnival's "Mira," The Sound of Music's "I Have Confidence" and "King of Broadway" in The Producers. The Eleven O'clock Number takes place about midway through Act Two.

Key Book Elements. A musical book has to: Keep the story line clear and easy to follow at all times. Create believeable characters that are easy to relate to, without resorting to stereotypes. (Good luck!) Create situations that call characters into song. Move in and out of songs smoothly.
