When you go invisible, the screen fades and the monsters etc around you disappear. It's as if you're running through a desolate area (cave full of mobs, you can't see any, they can't see you). Seeing as you wouldn't be aware of running right next to/into mobs, invisibility does just that, makes you invisible, whereas the previous version didn't.
Invisibility potions are the best anti gank strategy in the game. They are extremely useful for all kinds of situations, but as they put all potions on a 10 minute cooldown, its best to only use these in an emergency.
