13 gru 2021 · Mauna Kea State Recreation Area is on Hawaii Island (formerly called the Big Island) about 35 miles west of Hilo. The park is also one of the only spots in the world where you can travel from sea level to over 13,000 feet within a two-hour drive on a single road.
The park is relatively isolated. Nearest public eateries, gas/service stations or stores/markets are approximately 30 miles away. Be prepared and plan ahead. Bunkhouse/Cabin permittees shall check in between 3-8 pm on the first day of their stay. Checkout is no later than 9 am on the final day of their stay.

A. The average round-trip hiking time is 8 hours, 5 hours up and 3 hours down. Don’t expect to have enough daylight to complete the journey unless you leave early enough. Be aware that the sun sets earlier in the winter.
