The tax collector-turned-disciple Matthew has emerged as the character Jenkins has seen audiences find most engaging, and one that has personal investment in. The character in The Chosen has been written as being on the Asperger’s/autism spectrum, a disorder that makes interaction and nonverbal communication more difficult.
There is nothing in the bible to suggest that Matthew was autistic. The bible does not go into that detail. We just know that he was a tax collector and hated at large by his peers.
The once tax collector, Matthew, is depicted as an autistic man struggling to find his place in the world. He then finds it in Jesus' loving call to follow him. The show's intention behind this is noble, to present a picture of autistic inclusion in the body of Christ and make autistic people feel seen.
