Matthew’s genealogy calls Joseph “the son of David” (Matt 1:20) to further underscore that Jesus is the rightful King of Israel. By contrast, Herod was viewed as usurping the throne because, as an Edomite, he was descended not from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but Esau.
