23 wrz 2024 · Math strategies for problem-solving help students use a range of approaches to solve many different types of problems. It involves identifying the problem and carrying out a plan of action to find the answer to mathematical problems.
If a problem seems overwhelming, has a lot of steps, or very large numbers, try to solve a simpler version or a similar problem to help get you going in the right direction. For example, I was recently working with a third grader on some story problems. The question said,
You can get better and better at solving problems, both by building up your background knowledge and by simply practicing. As you solve more problems (and learn how other people solved them), you learn strategies and techniques that can be useful.
Look for context--kinds of numbers—money, time, size. Then use a strategy you know to figure out the answer. Start by estimating what the size of the answer will be. Here are some strategies you can use. List information you need to use. Use a model. Use a rule you know. Make a table. Make a diagram.
