11 paź 2023 · Rules. We follow the following three steps while rounding a number: Identifying the rounding digit. When rounding down, we keep it the same if the next digit is less than 5. When rounding up, we increase it by 1 if the next digit is 5 or more than 5. Rounding to the Nearest Ten.
How to Round Numbers. Decide which is the last digit to keep. Leave it the same if the next digit is less than 5 (this is called rounding down) But increase it by 1 if the next digit is 5 or more (this is called rounding up) Example: Round 74 to the nearest 10.
When you are rounding a number to the nearest 10, you are trying to find out which multiple of 10 your number is closest to. The golden rule with rounding is that if a number is exactly halfway between two multiples of 10, you always round up.
Rounding means making a number simpler but keeping its value close to what it was. The result is less accurate, but easier to use. Example: 7.3 rounds to 7. Because 7.3 is closer to 7 than to 8. (Note: we round to whole numbers in these examples, but we can round to tens, tenths, etc) But what about 7.5? Is it closer to 7 or closer to 8?

Rounding numbers also features in UKS2 Maths. In Year 5, children will use their knowledge of rounding numbers to increase their accuracy of mental maths. They will check their answers to calculations using rounding and estimations, to make sure their answer is plausible.
