25 lis 2024 · Transects are lines laid out across a site that can be used to measure abundance and distribution across a habitat. Transects are useful for determining how species abundance and distribution might change along a gradient e.g. at increasing distances from a field margin or perpendicular to the water's edge on a rocky shore

Transects can be used to investigate the effects of a changing factor on the distribution and abundance of organisms. A transect can be placed along a gradient of a factor (e.g. from shade to full sunlight). A belt transect uses quadrats placed along the straight line to measure distribution and abundance.
Biology is a quantitative experimental science, and mathematical skills are an essential part of AS and A level Biology. The exam regulator Ofqual requires that at least 10% of the marks in A level Biology exams should assess mathematical skills at level 2 (i.e. GCSE Mathematics Higher Tier).
In the Population Dynamics Click & Learn, students explore two classic mathematical models that describe how populations change over time: the exponential and logistic growth models. Students learn about each model through an interactive simulator supported by introductory information and real biological examples.
