Marostica’s principal tourist sights are the two castles, one at the top of the hill above town, the other in the main square, Piazza Castello. In the square itself you can see the chessboard laid out in paving stones, and admire the view up to the upper castle (Castello Superiore).
Easily practicable, it leads to the upper part of the walled city through Piazza Ortigara square in Borgo Giara, the original settlement of Marostica. Enter through the Porta Bassano gate and closely follow the massive Scaligeri walls until the Church of the Carmini.
Innalzato sulla sommità del colle Pausolino, dialoga con il Castello Inferiore e domina la città murata. Edificato su una precedente torre, di cui si ha notizia in documenti duecenteschi, risale con ogni probabilità alla Signoria di Cansignorio della Scala (1340-1375), grande costruttore di opere difensive scaligere.
Firstly Marostica is a fantastic little town. Then in September every year a huge chess game is organised in the square outside the castle where the traditional game is played with horses and humans as the playing blocks in the chess game. There are great pizzerias and ristorante near the Piazza. The castle closes at 7pm to the public.
