The objective of the Marcellus Shale Energy and Environment Laboratory (MSEEL) is to provide a long-term field site to develop and validate new knowledge and technology to improve recovery efficiency and minimize environmental implications of unconventional resource development.
The massive Marcellus shale is arguably the star of the Appalachian Basin plays. It is the largest and one of the deepest natural gas play in the United States, located directly under the Mahantongo and Tully Limestone formations. It also overlaps its neighboring shale to the north, the Utica.
The Marcellus natural gas trend is a large geographic area of prolific shale gas extraction from the Marcellus Shale or Marcellus Formation, of Devonian age, in the eastern United States. [2] The shale play encompasses 104,000 square miles and stretches across Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and into eastern Ohio and western New York. [3]
The Marcellus Formation or the Marcellus Shale is a Middle Devonian age unit of sedimentary rock found in eastern North America. Named for a distinctive outcrop near the village of Marcellus, New York, in the United States, [3] it extends throughout much of the Appalachian Basin. [4][5][6]
26 gru 2023 · The Marcellus Shale is predicted to produce 85 trillion SCF (TSCF) of gas from 12,406 existing wells. By drilling ∼3700 and ∼7800 new wells in the core and noncore areas, the estimated ultimate recovery is poised to increase to ∼180 TSCF.
At the end of the first quarter of 2024, with natural gas prices depressed, the prolific Marcellus Shale gas play rolled along, albeit at a slower pace than usual with some producers cutting back production in March with a wait-and-see attitude toward prices.
