The turtles found in Ohio are the midland painted turtle, spiny softshell, smooth softshell, eastern musk turtle, pond slider, Ouachita map turtle, northern map turtle, Blanding’s turtle, common snapping turtle, woodland box turtle, and the spotted turtle.
The Ouachita Map Turtle appears to have a very limited distribution in Ohio, being found only in the Scioto River and associated oxbows. Differentiating between a Ouachita and Northern Map Turtle can be very difficult, especially if the turtle is not in hand. Pay close attention to the yellow spot behind the eye.
We observed 24 Ouachita Map Turtles on the Great Kanawha River at 15 locations, 3 on the Ohio River at 2 locations, and 5 on the Little Kanawha at 4 locations (Fig. 1). All but 3 Ouachita Map Turtles were observed
6 sty 2024 · The rarest turtle in Ohio is the Ouachita map turtle. These rare turtles are a Species of Special Concern in the state, found only in the Scioto River and its associated oxbows. Ouachita map turtles have dark brown or olive-colored shells and yellow markings on their faces.
19 lip 2012 · Unlike the Common Map Turtle, the Ouachita Map Turtle also has a yellow blob under each eye and on each side of its jaw. The two species of map turtle are also similar in that both species have a ridge on their carapaces that runs from neck to tail.
Look for these turtles in Ohio in lakes, rivers, and streams with sandy or muddy bottoms and little or no vegetation. I often see them sunning themselves on the banks while kayaking down slow-moving rivers. Spiny Softshell Turtle Rangemap:
