Kirkwood Mountain has a base elevation of 7,800 feet and is centrally located on Carson Pass, making it a good measure of weather conditions from Silver Lake to the summit of Carson Pass. Carson Pass itself is 8,600 feet, only 800 feet higher than Kirkwood.
Overview. ADOT has reopened the 5-mile unpaved section of State Route 88 (Apache Trail) from Fish Creek Vista (milepost 222) to milepost 227 near Reavis Trailhead Road that was closed due to extensive roadway damage and rock debris following severe flooding in 2019.

State Route 88 ( SR 88) is a 45.67 mi (73.50 km) long state highway in the U.S. state of Arizona. It runs from U.S. Route 60 (US 60) in Apache Junction through desert terrain to SR 188 near Roosevelt Dam.

SR 88 is paved from Apache Junction to the town of Tortilla Flat. From there it is a dirt trail until it nears the Theodore Roosevelt Dam where it becomes paved again until its end. Sadly, SR 88 is currently closed indefinitely between miles 222 and 229 due to damage from the Woodbury Fire in 2019.
