The Maned Wolf, or Chrysocyon brachyurus, is a uniquely captivating creature native to South America. It resembles a large red fox and is the largest canid in the region. Perhaps its most striking feature is its remarkable mane, a distinctive trait that serves as a warning signal.
The maned wolf is South America’s largest canid, and represents a unique branch of the canid family tree – it really is in a class of its own. Sadly, however, numbers are being threatened by human activity, including a land-use shift towards more irrigation practices and deforestation for agriculture.
The Zoo has been working to protect maned wolves for nearly 30 years and coordinates the Maned Wolf Species Survival Plan, which includes breeding maned wolves, studying them in the wild, protecting their habitat, and in situ education programs.
