Dato' Chuah Thean Teng (Chinese: 蔡天定; pinyin: Cài Tiāndìng; Jyutping: Coi3 Tin1 Ding6; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chhòa Thian-tēng; 1914 – 25 November 2008), also known as Cai Tianding, was a Malaysian artist who is credited with the development of batik as a painting technique.
Thean Teng’s romantic renditions of idyllic village life and his innovative experiments with batik have become synonymous with the celebration of the land and its peoples, and encapsulated the hopes and aspirations of a newly independent Malaysia and the nation-building movement.

8 lis 2022 · Cheong Laitong, a pioneering artist who introduced a new modern aesthetic to post-independence Malaysian art, has died. He was 90. The news was confirmed by a family member, who revealed that Laitong (as he was more popularly known) died in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 4.
