Dato' Chuah Thean Teng (Chinese: 蔡天定; pinyin: Cài Tiāndìng; Jyutping: Coi3 Tin1 Ding6; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chhòa Thian-tēng; 1914 – 25 November 2008), also known as Cai Tianding, was a Malaysian artist who is credited with the development of batik as a painting technique.
Sarkasi bin Said (27 March 1940–14 October 2021), best known as Sarkasi Said and also known by the artist name Tzee, was a contemporary Singaporean batik artist known for abstract batik paintings and his use of unconventional wax-resist techniques. [1]
His work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions in Manchester, Hull, and the Midlands. After he returned to Malaysia, Malek set up a batik factory in Kuantan. He continued to practice as one of the country’s finest batik artists until his untimely death in 1982.
Fatimah Chik (b. 1947, Johor) is an influential Malaysian batik artist who arrived at art through textile design. In 1971, she graduated among the inaugural batch of the MARA Institute of Technology’s School of Art and Design (opened in 1967) with a Bachelors in Textile Design.
THE PIONEER AND HIS LEGACY: Three Generations. Chuah Thean Teng is recognised as a pioneer of Malaysian batik painting. Teng’s experiments transformed batik, previously confined to being worn as sarong and kebaya, into a fine art medium that is displayed on the wall.
